Spectrum Choral Academy
Summer Camp registration is now open!
SPECTRUM CHORAL ACADEMYFounded in 2011, Spectrum Choral Academy is a community choir program for children, teens and college age singers with the purpose of inspiring young people through quality music education and performances. Weekly rehearsals are held from September through May on Tuesdays in Gig Harbor, WA. We also offer summer camps and festivals throughout the year.
Spectrum Choral Academy offers three levels of vocal music instruction:
Grades K-5: Children's Chorus Tuesdays 4:45-6:00 PM Our Elementary choir is for kids who love to sing! No experience necessary – but all singers must be able to match pitch. Each rehearsal includes quality vocal instruction and music movement activities. Singers are exposed to songs in a variety of genres, languages, keys, tempos and styles in preparation for annual Christmas and Spring concerts. Music theory instruction is included (singers are invited to arrive as early as 4:30 for theory study and social time). Children's Chorus singers participate in annual Christmas and Spring Concerts and the Youth Choir Festival NW, learning about 20 new choir songs each year. Grades 6-12 & Alumni: Youth Chorus Tuesdays 6:45-8:45 PM Our Youth Chorus is for teens and young adults who have a passion for singing, open to singers in middle school, high school and college. No choral experience necessary, but singers must be able to match pitch and have a desire to improve their vocal/music theory skills within a team environment. Each rehearsal includes advanced level vocal instruction working with music in a variety of genres, languages, keys, tempos and styles. A high volume of challenging and rewarding repertoire in 2-8 parts is learned and memorized each season. Music theory instruction is included (singers are invited to arrive at 6:30 for theory study and social time). Youth Chorus singers participate in annual Christmas and Spring Concerts, Youth Choir Festival NW and our week-long Honor Choir Camp in Aug. Many of our Youth Chorus graduates have gone on to major in music in college, become music teachers, section leaders and professional musicians. Select Singers Highschool-College: Ensemble This advanced level vocal ensemble is designed for our most dedicated and passionate HS/college musicians. Ensemble singers rehearse as part of Youth Chorus and leaders of Children's Chorus – functioning as role models, section leaders, theory teachers, rehearsal assistants, festival staff and camp counselors. Expectations: advanced musician, solo quality voice, entering 9th grade or above, 1 year minimum Spectrum Youth Chorus experience, role model behavior at all Spectrum events, advanced music theory/note reading/sight singing skills, good rehearsal & concert attendance. A limited number of singers will be selected for this ensemble each year. |

Singing From traditional folk tunes to choral classics and Broadway favorites, we work on quality choral repertoire learning how to sing a beautiful unison up to multi-part harmony. Instruments Students have opportunities to create sounds and play rhythms using percussion instruments. We also regularly perform with a variety of advanced student and professional instrumentalists in concert. |
Movement Feel the music in your body. Students who make singing a whole body experience learn faster and retain what they learn. We often add dance scarves and choreography to our choral music. Rhythm Learn how to keep a steady beat and play different rhythms. Body percussion is also a regular part of our rehearsals. Vocal technique Discover how to use your voice in a healthy, enjoyable way. |
Music theory Learn how to read notes and follow a musical score with music theory program. Friends and Fun Connect with with other young people who also have a passion for music! Singers who are involved in our program long-term create friendships that last a lifetime. |
