Project Lullaby
July 2013 - Project Lullaby is a new outreach program of Spectrum Choral Academy of Gig Harbor, WA. In spring 2014, our children's and youth choirs will be recording soothing and beautiful music as a gift to newborns, hospitalized children and their families in the Seattle region. Our goal is to expose more young children to the benefits of quality music - a gift for kids, from kids.
Within the last few years, human and animal studies have examined the psychological and physiological effects of music. We know that music produces an emotional reaction and reduction of stress response in the listener. In one study referenced in this CNN article: This is your brain on music, patients who listened to music had less anxiety and lower cortisol than people who took drugs. The emotional benefits of music are many - music provides joy in times of celebration and healing in times of distress. Music connects people, creates new memories and reminds us of special times past. The songs selected for Project Lullaby are chosen specifically for these purposes - making memories for children and their families.
Project Lullaby also gives the children and youth of Spectrum Choral Academy a deeper purpose for their music making: to inspire other local children and families through their music. Other choirs have done similar projects around the US with very positive results. Long-term, children who grow up listening to the quality recordings are more interested in learning an instrument or joining a local children's choirs - maybe even the choir they grew up listening to!
Project Lullaby is completely funded through donations of supporters like you!
